5 Questions to Ask Before You Import to the BVI
Because “stocking your shelves” shouldn’t feel like a gamble.
Running a business in Tortola or Virgin Gorda is hard enough without shipping headaches. Whether you’re bringing in commercial fridges for a restaurant or furniture for a new villa, the process can feel like a “black box” of hidden costs and delays.
Before you commit your hard-earned capital, ask these five questions to ensure your goods actually make it to your door.
1. Who is actually making this?
Don’t just talk to a broker or a middleman. You want to know the factory making your goods. This ensures quality stays high and your pricing stays fair.
2. What is the real timeline?
A “shipping date” isn’t a “delivery date.” Ask for the full timeline: from the factory floor, through the port, and through BVI customs. You need to know when the goods will be on your shelves, not just when they leave Asia.
3. Can I see a sample first?
Never order blind. A sample is your insurance policy. Test the quality before you commit to a full container.
4. What is the “Landed Cost”?
Price is one thing; the final cost is another. Does your quote include the product, shipping, and duties? Always ask for the full breakdown so there are no surprises when the boat arrives.
5. What happens if something goes wrong?
If a shipment is delayed or a product is damaged, who handles it? You need a partner who takes the stress off your plate, not someone who disappears when things get complicated.
You should spend more time running your business and less time chasing containers.
